  • Half Day Retreat: Emptiness and the Heart Sutra

Thubten Kunga Ling 201 SE 15th Terrace Suite 206, Deerfield Beach, FL, United States

The Heart Sutra is one of the most recited texts in the Buddhist world — and one of the most misunderstood. In just a few lines, it points to the most profound insight in all of Buddhist philosophy: that things do not exist the way they appear to exist. This insight is called emptiness. Emptiness is not nihilism. It is not the idea that nothing exists. It is the recognition that the solid, fixed, independent reality we take for granted — including the solid, fixed self we spend so much energy protecting — is not quite what it seems. And that recognition, even a small taste of it, is liberating. This half-day retreat unpacks the teaching in the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of emptiness, and guides you into meditation on what these words are actually pointing to. You will leave with both an intellectual grasp of one of Buddhism's deepest teachings and a felt sense of what it means. Some familiarity with Buddhist concepts is required. All are welcome. • Conscious Conversation: The Courage to Be Real

Thubten Kunga Ling 201 SE 15th Terrace Suite 206, Deerfield Beach, FL, United States

Somewhere along the way, most of us learned to present a version of ourselves that feels safer than the real one — more composed, more capable, more certain than we actually are. And somewhere along the way, maintaining that version became exhausting. Vulnerability is often misunderstood as weakness. Buddhist psychology sees it differently: the willingness to be seen as we actually are is the beginning of freedom from the grasping and self-protection that underlies so much of our suffering. It is not a risk — it is a relief. This evening is a conversation about what it means to live more honestly — with ourselves and with others — and how that honesty connects to the deeper questions of purpose, meaning, and what we are actually looking for. The format is a round table — everyone seated together, sharing from their own experience, with space for questions, reflection, and real talk. No experience with Buddhism or meditation is needed. Come as you are. Join us at the Center or online via Zoom.
